Killer Summer Albums!

Hi friends! Guess who is so excited about all the awesome music being released this summer?? That’s right, it’s me! And it should be you too! So I am quite excited to share what I believe are the “songs of the summer!”

Music, like any other art form, is subjective to an individual’s life experience combined with their unique view of the world. I just love that because it makes our own taste of music is the greatest taste of music. And as you will see below, I have a pretty eclectic taste in music.
Anyways, here are my opinions on some of the greatest albums to Jam to when you’re partying it up this summer!! (P.S. I have yet to listen to Jay-Z’s new album which is why it is omitted in this post)

Let’s start with the most talked about, and my personal favorite, DAFT PUNK’s “Random Access Memories.” The current hit “Get Lucky” certainly was lucky  and has remained in the top 5 on the charts since it’s American release in early May. My favorite song on the album is “Doin It Right” and features Panda Bear. Doin’ It Right is a MUST for your summer playlist because it has a beat that literally forces you to dance and lyrics that are so catchy you’ll find yourself singing them without realizing it. I find it the perfect opportunity to gyrate to a catchy chorus. It is just such a care-free feel-good song. The whole album really is. Go listen to it on Spotify and see for yourself! And Congrats to Daft Punk for your most commercially accepted album to date!

THE STROKES have a fantastic new album called “Comedown Machine“!!! There has been some confusion about this album release because it was barely advertised and kind of came out of nowhere. But guess what?! That is the BEST kind of surprise! There is lots of variety while still keeping the bands classic sound. My favorite song is called “Tap Out.” It might literally be my favorite song right now. I keep listening to it on repeat and it hasn’t gotten old! It’s just another excuse for me to gyrate to a catchy chorus I guess? Another song, Call It Fate, Call It Karma, is slow and sultry with a 20’s feel and a built in texture that sounds as though it is being played on an old record player. Very fascinating stuff if I say so myself! Anyways, the album is great and a couple of songs off of this baby will certainly diversify and plump and summer playlist.

Despite it’s mixed reviews and outrageous popularity, Kanye West’s “Yeezus” scares the crap out of me. Did he have to blow off some steam before bearing the responsibilities of being a father?! I mean, the CD has a song called “I Am A God” and has God listed in the song credits. This is just odd. Not to mention that his performance on SNL literally gave me chills… and not because it moved me. It was because he sincerely freaked me out!! AND did you hear that there are 67 other credited artists associated with the record?! THAT IS SO MANY PEOPLE! Oh well. He is on The Bling Ring Soundtrack, which I will talk about in a minute, so that’s cool. Do I hate the music? No. Will I buy the album? No. Is it kinda cool that it’s freaky? Yeah, who doesn’t love a little oddity? Congrats Kanye on making the weirdest Album of 2013! Also Congrats on Baby North West… weirdo.

I saw this when I Googled “Yeezus” and I just thought this was hilarious.

FINALLY WE HAVE ARRIVED AT THE BLING RING SOUNDTRACK. Sorry I’m yelling, it’s just that this collection of music pumps adrenaline through my veins like nothing else… even more than a Triple Caramel Frape! If you wanna get pumped up for a night out, a sporting event, any sort of competition, or even if you just want to have a singular dance party – LOOK. NO. FURTHER. With artists from Sleigh Bells to Rick Ross & Lil Wayne, from M.I.A. to Azealia Banks, from Kanye West to Deadmau5 – there is no way this album could go wrong. Give it a listen and prepare to twerk in ways Miley Cyrus can’t even imagine. It makes me feel like I could do anything, as it also will for you!

Jimmy Eat World: Damage. At first listen, I will admit I was slightly bored. I LOVE Jimmy Eat World and was just kind of disappointed. However, shortly after listening I had an extremely vivid dream that I made a movie called “Our Wild Lives” about crazy teenagers and love and stuff and Bradley Cooper was in it and it was awesome – and the song playing during the credits of my movie was none other than Damage!! And it was too perfect. And I woke up like, “YES I LOVE THIS SONG!” So, subconsciously this song inspired me to make a movie which is actually quite incredible. Go Jimmy Eat World! I’ll credit you in my Oscar Speech.

OneRepublic’s Native goes through all the stages of being in love (not necessarily in order). It’s uplifting and inspiring and heartbreaking and just gives me a lot of feels. I’m not a huge fan of the current hit single “Counting Stars” but I really enjoy the rest of the songs. My absolute favorite is called “Feel Again” and it is a seriously beautiful love song about how a person can make you feel when you’ve been young for so long.

J.A.C.K.

Welcome to my punk-pop side! My boys Forever the Sickest Kids just released their album J.A.C.K. As sometimes is the case, upon first listen nothing stuck out to me. I wasn’t sure what they were really going for, ya know? But then I listened again slightly more attentively and discovered that the album is actually AMAZING. It was created with an intention to uplift and inspire which is something missing in the punk/pop scene these days. With songs like  “Chin Up Kid” about how to deal with bad break ups and how you need to love yourself before you can love someone else, “Nice to Meet You” and “Ritalin (I Was Born in America)” are both about teen culture in America and all the peer pressure and confusion that comes along with growing up, and “Kick It!” which is about getting out of your own way to accomplish your dreams. I’m diggin’ it FTSK!

evil-friends.

I absolutely adore the new Portugal. The Man album Evil Friends. I can’t pick a favorite song. I just wanna sway in a summer breeze and listen to them as I run through a field of sunflowers. Such a dream. Maybe my favorite song is the funky “Atomic Man.” Or maybe it’s the super chill “Hip Hop Kids.” There’s also the very colorful “Purple Yellow Red and Blue.” Perhaps it is the album’s Titled song “Evil Friends.” I can’t pick but you should give it a listen and see!

Woo Hoo! I was so excited for Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires of the City! It did not disappoint. I always love them so much because they have a recognizable unique sound that was not lost in this album. It makes me happy! “Diane Young” is the most popular song on the album and with it’s fast paced- funky beats I’m not surprised. My favorite song is “Ya Hey.” At first I thought it was gibberish but after minimal research I discovered that the song is religious and is speaking to God? It’s super deep but the music video (shooting now in NYC) is rumored to be very controversial. We shall see, Vampire Weekend, we shall see.

Weight-Of-Your-Love.

The Weight of Your Love by Editors is just what you would expect from these post-punk revivalists. It’s very heavy and appropriately named. The first song on the album is my favorite: “The Weight” has these deep choral harmonies in the background that give it an eerie feel. I’m so into the eerie! Another great song, with another appropriate title, is “A Ton of Love.” Get it? Don’t worry, not all of the song titles are puns on weight. There’s one called “Formaldehyde!

City and Colour has a new one called The Hurry and The Harm. This is a totally chill summer night, lying in the grass, looking up at the stars, catching fireflies kind of album. I love it. All of it.

Justin Timberlake: The 20/20 Experience. You already know why this album is good. It needs no explanation. The second section of this 2 part album is scheduled for release September 30, 2013.

Demi Lovato’s new album Demi is very personal and I love that about her. She is an artist who wears her heart on her sleeve and lets her emotions run wild in her music. She is such a down to earth girl and I am so happy that young women can look up to this very REAL girl celebrity.
